El-Hussein surname (in arabic الحصين, most known in Chile as 'Lahsen', 'Lazen' or 'Lasen') originally comes from a town called Al-Husson located in the actually Jordan. Years ago, members from different families emigrate from different places to Beit-Jala (in arabic بيت جالا), in the West Bank, current Palestine (Palestinian Occupied Territories), towns from where the families came: It's worth saying that the members coming from Al-Reineh and Al-Walajeh, didn't have the same surname as the Al-Husson emigrated members. But later on they merged to become one big family. As these acts had taken place years ago it became nearly impossible to specify the origin of each member and each branch of the family. According to the records, this family was following the Islamic religion, but it is not clear at which period they changed their belief and became Christians. After they had settled in Beit-Jala, they didn't leave it until the immigration movement in the early XX century. Source: 'A Tour in the History of the Holy Land', of Hanna Giacaman.. |
The first immigration movement in modern ages took place in the early XX century, when Palestine was occupied by the Ottoman Empire. As a result of the impoverishment and the punishment systems used in the Palestinian territories by the Ottomans at that time, the Palestinian young men started an emigrating movement by the beginning of 1900. Mussa El-Hussein Haman arrived to Chile (most known in Chile as Moises Lahsen), followed by his cousin Yacoub (Jacobo) in 1902 and later Mikhail (Miguel) in 1906. At that time, most of them didn't know the latin alphabet, so the civil registry government employees wrote the surname as it sounded approximately to spanish language, some members was registered as 'Lahsen', another group as 'Lasen' and others were registered as 'Lazen' in their ID cards. Later on, another immigration movement to Chile took place after the Partition in 1948, as for those cases, the members kept the original surname; El-Hussein.
